Bentley manuals are very useful

If you plan on owning your VW for many years (I have one that I bought in 1992) and you aren't afraid of touching your car, then you should have a Bentley manual for your VW. It basically tells you how the car can be disassembled and reassembled so that you can perform repairs and replace broken parts. Even if the work is beyond your capabilities, it helps you diagnose problems and informs you of what needs to be done. Bentley manuals are a worthwhile investment.

I bought this book because I buy one for all my VWs and it was highly discounted on Amazon. These manuals were critical before the Internet. Now you can go to vwvortex, and after much searching, find information similar to this manual (sometimes with lots of good photos). I generally check both.

Even though my car is relatively new (6 years old), there have been two instances where I needed this manual and was happy I had it on hand. This manual is nicer than previous Bentleys. It uses high quality paper, better printing, and even includes beautiful color diagrams (the Jetta Sportwagen manual is hardcover).

Update: I gave this book a four star rating instead of five because starting with the mkV generation (2006+) VWs have been transformed from mechanical devices to computers with mechanical parts. This increased complexity has reduced the utility of the Bentley manual even though it is better than Bentleys for earlier VW models. But it definitely still worth buying.

Money Well Spent

Prior to purchasing this manual, and before beginning any car maintenance or repair, I would scour the web for a reliable how-to. Many times, this method proved time consuming and confusing.The time and frustration saved by having an accurate, easy to read and understand reference made for money well-spent. If you plan on doing ANY maintenance, I highly recommend you have this manual at your side.

About the Author

Dr. Seiden has been a medical educator for his entire career. He has taught human gross anatomy and embryology for over forty years. Dr. Corbett is Associate Professor, Department of General Surgery, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

A classis account of freight mushing in early Alaska

I found this book in a vintage Alaskana bookshop about thirty years ago. Loved it. A great story about musing freight dogs during the gold rush days up around Nome and through the interior. Unfortunately I loaned it out and never got it back. How great that Wolf Creek has reprinted it!

I'm afraid that the other reviewers of this book knew little about Arthur Walden besides the experiences he describes in this book, covering the few years he spent in the Yukon as dogsled freighter, gold prospector, guide, boatman, longshoreman and any other pursuit he found to keep himself alive. He was a brave, ambitious, kind, and ethical man. But beyond that, as I well know, he returned to the lower 48 where he established the Chinook breed of dogs, drove a sled to the summit of Mt. Washington, raced and founded dogsled racing competition in New England. Then he hauled freight by dog in Antarctica for Admiral Byrd, returned home nearly broke and died rescuing his wife from a home fire. Once a hero in NH, he remains in many of our memories as the great man he was. It is a pity more people are kept from reading this book because of price gouging.

A satire of business books that's actually a good business book!

If you are familiar with the Dilbert cartoon, then you know Scott Adams' ability to skewer modern business organizations. This book mostly consists of text organized in little easy-to-understand bits, just like a real business book. This satirical text is illustrated with Dilbert cartoons. Of course it's funny, and if you like Dilbert, you'll enjoy it.

What makes the book really work, though, is that it's actually loaded with good management advice. When the book came out, I was an object of management and enjoyed the book as making fun of the people above me in a large organization. Now I'm a low-level perpetrator of management and I find this to be a really good source of "what not to do." I still laugh but I also appreciate Adams' ability to find the humor - - and the inhumanity - - in even well-meaning management.
