The English Assassin, by Daniel Silva

From the New York Times-bestselling author of The Unlikely Spy, Daniel Silva, comes a taut, lightning-paced thriller rooted assuredly in fact: Switzerland's shameful WWII record of profiteering and collaboration with Nazi Germany.

The Unlikely Spy, Daniel Silva's extraordinary debut novel, was applauded by critics as it rocketed onto national bestseller lists. "Briskly suspenseful, tightly constructed...reminiscent of John le Carre's The Spy Who Came in From the Cold," said the New York Times. "Silva has clearly done his homework mixing fact and fiction to delicious effect and building tension - with the breathtaking double and triple turns of plot - like a seasoned pro," praised People. Now, Silva brings his considerable talent to his latest tale of danger and deception, The English Assassin.

When art restorer and occasional Israeli agent Gabriel Allon is sent to Zurich, Switzerland, to restore the painting of a reclusive millionaire banker, he arrives to find his would-be employer murdered at the foot of his Raphael. A secret collection of priceless, illicitly gained Impressionist masterpieces is missing. Gabriel's handlers step out of the shadows to admit the truth - the collector had been silenced - and Gabriel is put back in the high-stakes spy game, battling wits with the rogue assassin he helped to train.

Tense, taut, expertly crafted, and brimming with unexpected reversals, The English Assassin is Daniel Silva at his storytelling best.

Amazon.com Review
The English Assassin brings back Gabriel Allon, the appealingly melancholy art restorer with a double life as an Israeli secret agent, first introduced in 2000's The Kill Artist. Gabriel is sent to Zurich under a pseudonym to restore a Raphael belonging to a prominent Swiss banker and art collector, Augustus Rolfe, but upon arriving he finds Rolfe lying in a pool of blood. When Gabriel tries to leave Zurich, the Swiss police capture him immediately--and moreover, they know his real identity. He's released through some diplomatic string-pulling, but he soon discovers that Rolfe had requested a meeting with Israeli intelligence, for reasons unknown, just before his death.

Rolfe's daughter, Anna, is a world-class violinist attempting to rebuild her career after an accident that nearly destroyed one of her hands. But her physical scars are nothing compared to those on her psyche, left by her mother's suicide when Anna was a teenager. Temperamental and mistrustful, she nevertheless believes Gabriel's story, and reveals that Rolfe owned a secret collection of priceless French Impressionist paintings, apparently stolen by his murderers.

As Gabriel begins to put together the pieces of the puzzle, he faces two adversaries: a powerful group of men who would do anything to bury the past forever, and a hired killer who's planning a spectacular murder. Like The Kill Artist, The English Assassin balances fascinating characters, authentic-sounding historical detail, and plenty of glamorous international intrigue on the edge of a knife-keen plot. --Barrie Trinkle

From Publishers Weekly
Switzerland's shameful behavior in WWII provides the backdrop for this superbly crafted thriller that puts Silva at the forefront of his generation of foreign intrigue specialists. Here, the former CNN correspondent also appears to have settled on a main character to propel his promising line Gabriel Allon, the art restorer and Israeli hit man who starred in last year's acclaimed The Kill Artist. Just a few pages into this sequel, Allon finds himself the apparent victim of a double cross. When he arrives to restore a Raphael owned by reclusive Swiss banker Augustus Rolfe, Allon not only discovers the banker dead but finds himself the number one suspect. The charge doesn't stick, however, and when he is released from custody, he vows to find out who tried to frame him. His first stop is Rolfe's daughter, Anna, one of the world's top violinists and a woman haunted by her family's heritage of wartime greed and cruelty. Allon catches the attention of Switzerland's secretive power structure, which intends to stymie any further investigation into Rolfe's murder and the theft of his suspiciously acquired art collection. The so-called Council of Rtli contracts with a shadowy hit man, known only as the Englishman, to eliminate Allon and anyone else who threatens to expose Switzerland's past. The action unfolds in tightly focused scenes played out across a spectrum of European capitals and more pastoral settings. As a historical framework, the secrets of the Bahnhofstrasse are well-trod territory, yet Silva's sophisticated treatment polished prose, an edgy mood, convincing research gives his plot a crisp, almost urgent quality. Agent, Esther Newberg of ICM. 100,000 first printing; $100,000 national advertising campaign.

ALLON IS AN ENTHRALLING CHARACTER
By Seattle Reader
My review may be somewhat biased as I have read several of the Silva Gabriel Allon series and really enjoy Silva's writing: his pacing, character development and details are so excellent. I have traveled to most of the locations described in this (and his other) book(s) and felt as if I were back there on the streets and cities he described. Allon is, to me, an enthralling character despite his abilities which sometimes seems superhuman. He speaks at least 5 languages and can change the dialect (e.g. German with a Berlin accent) for many of them, can memorize faces, facts and numbers to an extent that almost defies a reader's imagination and of course is one of the world's greatest fine arts restoration experts. He also takes physical and psychological punishment without any apparent permanent and yet, I really want to believe he, or someone like him, exists. I ordinarily get somewhat bored reading a series book because they either tend to get very predictable or the quality of writing deteriorates. I don't feel as if this is the case in this series which, by the way, does not have to be read in sequence. Each is a stand alone story with some minor details which change (Gabriels' marital status and his place in the agency come to mind) Maybe only a masterpiece such as To Kill a Mockingbird or The Goldfinch rates 5 stars but I really love Silva's writing, thus the 5 stars.

Too Formulaic For My Tastes
By Emma
So I've read a couple of the Gabriel Allon book now--the Michael Osborne books too. Without fail, the plots follow predictablel: scheming oligarchs which prove to be the real powers that be, embarrassing secrets, massive greed, murder-for-hire ordered as casually as take-out and an absence of all morality. This is in contrast to our brilliant hero (add drum rolls), Israeli agent Gabriel Allon, his psyche tragically damaged as a result of a mission gone awry, intent on righting wrong (add cape). PLEASE!

And some of the writing "You've killed again Gabriel-I can see it on your face." DOUBLE PLEASE!

I've been reading out of order and jumping between the Gabriel Allon series and the Michael Osborne series-I enjoyed Book 1 in the Allon series if for no reason other than the fact it was unique, book three (Allon) was fascinating but followed the same plot lines as the Osborne series, and now it's deja vu all over again. This book, The English Assassin (Book 2-Allon) is equally redundant, which technically is not correct since Book 2 predeceased 3 as well as the Osborne series.

Unfortunately, it looks like Silva found a working formula and decided to stick with it. After all, it worked for Coca-Cola. The problem is, while the same recipe may work for a soft drink, it doesn't for a novel.

If you want a superhero and a story-line that's all black and white with a nice bow tied around it, this is it. Great if you're stuck in an airport but I won't be back for more absent some ambiguity and originality.

TWO ASSASSINS?
By William Lotz
This novel starts off with Mrs. Marguerite Rolfe digging in her garden. She is actually digging her own grave because of secrets she'd found hidden in her husband's study. She lies down, picks up her husband's shotgun, puts the barrel in her mouth and pulls the trigger.

Thus begins a novel filled with intrigue, danger, murder, double cross and romance.

With a destroyed suicide note.

With two assassins, Gabriel Allon and "The Englishman".

A lovely artist who falls in love with Gabriel.

A Murder in Munich.

A secret list of art treasures stolen from Jews.

An ultra-secret group that buys these treasures.

Were it not for continuing, boring distractions where meaningless, boring facts required much skimming, I would have rated this novel higher. I still believe "The English Assassin" to be a very good read, and recommend it highly.
