From the Back Cover

The relentless pursuit of high self-esteem has become a virtual religion. Our ultracompetitive culture tells us we need to be constantly above average to feel good about ourselves, but there is always someone more attractive, successful, or intelligent than we are. And even when we do manage to grab hold of high self-esteem for a brief moment, we can't seem to keep it. Our sense of self-worth goes up and down like a Ping-Pong ball, rising and falling in lockstep with our latest success or failure.

Fortunately, there is an alternative to self-esteem that many experts believe is a better and more effective path to happiness: self-compassion. The research of Dr. Kristin Neff and other leading psychologists indicates that people who are compassionate toward their failings and imperfections experience greater well-being than those who repeatedly judge themselves. This book powerfully demonstrates why it's so important to be self-compassionate and give yourself the same caring support you'd give to a good friend.

Using solid empirical research, personal stories, practical exercises, and humor, Dr. Neff—the world's foremost expert on self-compassion—explains how to heal destructive emotional patterns so that you can be healthier, happier, and more effective.

Nothing less than exceptional !
By Amazon Customer
I usually doubt when someone says that a book, or a concept, is life-changing.

Trust me: THIS ONE IS. At least if you find yourself stuck in some struggle in your life that you feel is possible to be solved but you don't know how. If you feel fear of the consequences of doing something in your life you'll also find here what may be the origin and to heal this fear. This book is about being stronger, emotionally stronger, in a way that I didn't see any other author talk about. The subject of this book, I think, is the root for all the other strenghts we can have as human beings. I think that, without this, we can't be sucessful getting to the other strengths.

I've been lost in a depression for the last 6 years and I had read lots of books from the top authors on psychology, self-motivation, personal efectiveness and on and on. All I found was some strength to keep searching, but nothing EVER touched so exactly on what could be the reason and the cure for the bad emotions I had for all these years.

I'm sure that , for me , this book is one more piece of the puzzle I've been working on since my depression came into my life. But I can assert that it's the most meaningful piece so far. No doubt. Sometimes while reading I found myself avoiding the book because the transformation was being too intense in my point of view, but I noticed my pattern and kept on reading. It really was worth!

I could keep writing here for hours about how now I can see a path, a light, that I couldn't see before on some of the most difficults aspects of my life. Past and present aspects.

I strongly recommend this book to you, to anyone.

I'm from Brazil and I'm a bit sad that we don't have a portuguese version of this book yet, because I could buy at least one copy to every person that I like or love (truly, I would give also to the people that I could have any reason to don't like). If I was a rich guy I would give one of this to every psychologist on the world so that this practices could be used on their pacients alike.

Kristin, thank you for coming with this for the world! Thank you very much! Spread the talk about it as much as you can.

Changed my life more than any other book!!!!
By Miss Dawn
I am an avid reader of self-help and spiritual books. I have read nearly all of the popular and best-sellers. Authors include: John Bradshaw, Scot Peck, Marianne Williamson, Wayne Dyer, Deepak Chopra, Tony Robbins--- to name a few. I am definitely one who is searching and of ALL the hundreds of books I have read, lectures and sermons I have taken in, NONE have touched on the subject of self compassion the way Neff did. What stuck me the most was how she boldly illustrates how the self-esteem movement has failed and why. I think that many of the other authors and gurus still use the language of self esteem and thus their messages of compassion was shrouded, which is why I believe that this book is a MUST READ for anyone who is trapped in the vicious cycle of self-hatred, self-loathing, self-criticism and anything else that we do to ourselves that is less than kind. I am actually taking the time to do the exercises in the book with a journal and my life has CHANGED. This book produced results!!! I am not one to write a review unless it is something like really amazing, and I hope for the day when I can meet Neff in person and honor her for her contribution to my spiritual healing and journey. You will not be disappointed.

Very cool stuff.
By Brian Johnson
[[VIDEOID:e530d528fe8fb6c74657f6292ecf5061]] “The research that my colleagues and I have conducted over the past decade shows that self-compassion is a powerful way to achieve emotional well-being and contentment in our lives. By giving ourselves unconditional kindness and comfort while embracing the human experience, difficult as it is, we avoid destructive patterns of fear, negativity, and isolation. At the same time, self-compassion fosters positive mind-states such as happiness and optimism. The nurturing quality of self-compassion allows us to flourish, to appreciate the beauty and richness of life, even in hard times. When we soothe our agitated minds with self-compassion, we’re better able to notice what’s right as well as what’s wrong, so that we can orient ourselves toward that which gives us joy. . . .

You can’t always have high self-esteem and your life will continue to be flawed and imperfect—but self-compassion will always be there, waiting for you, a safe haven. In good times and bad, whether you’re on top of the world or at the bottom of the heap, self-compassion will keep you going, helping you move to a better place. It does take work to break the self-criticizing habits of a lifetime, but at the end of the day, you are only being asked to relax, allow life to be as it is, and open your heart to yourself. It’s easier than you might think, and it could change your life.”

~ Kristin Neff from Self-Compassion

I first heard about Kristin Neff and her work from Brené Brown—who is a huge (!) fan.

And I can see why Brené is such a big fan. Kristin is awesome.

Kristin is one of the world’s leading researchers on self-compassion. In fact, she is the one who first established self-compassion as a field of study almost a decade ago—bringing the Buddhist practice of self-compassion into her labs so the benefits could be empirically validated. Very cool stuff.

The book walks us through the scientific research underpinning the why’s and how’s of cultivating our self-compassion and is packed with theoretical and practical goodness.

Let's explore some of my favorite Big Ideas:

1. Self-Compassion Defined - The three key components.
2. #1. Self-Kindness - Be nice to yourself!
3. #2 Common Humanity - We're all in this together.
4. #3 Mindfulness - Seeing reality clearly.
5. Suffering = Pain x Resistance.

Self-kindness + common humanity + mindfulness does the trick to boost our self-efficacy and boost our shot at achieving our dreams!
