About the Author

Susan Ferguson is Professor of Sociology at Grinnell College, where she has taught for almost 20 years. Ferguson regularly teaches Introduction to Sociology, and her critically acclaimed anthology, "Mapping the Social Landscape: Readings in Sociology" (McGraw-Hill, 2010) is used in introductory classes around the country. Ferguson also teaches courses on the family, medical sociology, the Sociology of the Body, and a new seminar on social inequality and identity. Ferguson has published in all of these areas, including the research collection, "Breast Cancer: Society Shapes an Epidemic" (with co-editor Anne Kasper, Palgrave, 2000), and "Shifting the Center: Understanding Contemporary Families" (McGraw-Hill, 2011). In addition, Ferguson is the General Editor for Contemporary Family Perspectives, which is a series of research monographs and short texts on the family (Sage Publications).

Ferguson, who grew up in a working class family in Colorado, still considers the Rocky Mountains to be her spiritual home. A first-generation college student, Ferguson was able to attend college with the help of scholarships, work study, and financial loans. She majored in Political Science and Spanish and also completed certificates of study in Women s Studies and Latin American Studies. After working a couple of years for a large research grant sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development, Ferguson entered graduate school and completed her master s degree in sociology at Colorado State University and her Ph.D. in sociology at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Her areas of study are gender, family, women s health, and pedagogy, but her primary enthusiasm is for teaching.

This is a great compilation. The readings cover a wide variety of family, social, and intersectional issues with well-researched data and, for the most part, very readable voices. It's been my favorite "textbook" as an undergrad.

Completely indexed and all source information is included. Case bound with glossy pages, this volume can be passed on to your descendants and will last for generations. Contains several illustrations and maps. Will make a great gift for anyone descended from Joseph Brunner.

Excellent Textbook

I never thought I'd rave about a textbook, but I had to comment on this one!

Ahrens manages to present a scientific subject in an interesting and understandable manner. And what really makes this textbook special is the abundance of charts and illustrated explanations, plus photos, trivia, and weather stories interspersed liberally throughout the text. The illustrations and charts make the material easier to understand, and the photos, stories, and trivia helped keep me interested even when the science got tedious.

Not hackwork

This is an old book, but still one of the best. Hacking writes like a dream about extremely complicated issues. His discussion of Davidson and Tarksi is still streets ahead of some of the more recent book length discussions that get you lost really early. The chapter on Wittgenstein, is, unfortunately, not very good and way out of date. But the rest could still be given to (let's say) 2nd year students working on 20th century analytic philosophy, or the famed elusive informed citizen with a philosophical bent.

Not an Introductory Book

As with all of Hacking's books, it is well written and researched. However, it is not nearly as simple to understand as some of his other writings. I have taken courses one course each in logic, philosophy of psychiatry, and linguistics, and have done a good deal of reading on my own. That did NOT suffice. There is much discussion of early modern philosophy. I would not recommend this book unless you have some background in Hobbes, Locke, Descartes, etc., as well as some knowledge of twentieth century contemporary analytic philosophy.

This book is just barely out of the reach of someone who is interested and an avid reader. Something along the lines of a minor in philosophy is needed.
