About the Author

Se-Kwon Kim, Ph.D., is a professor of marine biochemistry in the Department of Chemistry, Pukyong National University (PKNU), Busan, South Korea. Dr. Kim received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from PKNU and became a faculty member there. He conducted his postdoctoral study at the Bioprocess Laboratory, Department of Food Science and Technology, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, Illinois USA (1988-1989). He became a visiting scientist at the Memorial University of Newfoundland in Canada (1999-2000).

Dr. Kim was the editor-in-chief of the Korean Journal of Life Sciences (1995- 1997), the Korean Journal of Fisheries Science and technology (2006- 2007) and the Korean Journal of Marine Bioscience and Biotechnology (2006- present). To the credit of his research, he won best paper awards from the American Oil Chemists’ Society (AOCS) and the Korean Society of Fisheries Science and Technology (KSFST) in 2002.

His major research interests are investigation and development of bioactive substances derived from marine organisms and their application as cosmeceuticals and nutraceuticals via marine bioprocessing and mass production technologies. He expanded his research fields into the industrialization of antiphotoaging and photoprotective substances from marine organisms.

He has authored over 450 research papers, holds 72 patents, and has written or edited more than 30 books.

For dummies.

The title says it all. It is a good starter and you'll learn how to take care of your orchids. The chapter about resources is truly excellent. However, this book won't take you much further from the basics, in my opinion. The colour plates are beautiful, but they are just a handful (8 pages). Black and white pictures don't make much sense here, after all this book is about orchids, right?
In the same price range I strongly recommend "Growing orchids" by Rittershausen, which contains almost the same information of more expensive books, and shows hundreds of colour pictures of very good quality. If you are willing to spend a little more, buy either "Understanding orchids" or "Orchid's grower companion". Here you are paying for the "for Dummies" trademark. This book would be a good buy at half of the price.

A VERY INFORMATIVE AND READABLE WORK.

This is actually a pretty good starter book. There are a vast number of books out there addressing the subjects of growing, identification, history, etc. of these wonderful plants, but for those that just bought their first orchid, or are contemplating such, then this is as good a book to start with as any. Needless to say, no book can do it all for you and as you grow in this wonderful hobby, you will want to check on more of the wonderful resources available. When I first began raising orchids, it was hard to find anything that was meant for the general public, and most orchid books were unreadable (if you could even find them) unless you had a degree on horticulture. I killed off quite a few of these plants in my learning process, still do for that matter, but that is what is so fascinating about this hobby, i.e. there is always so much more to learn.

As with all the idiot books, this one covers your basic informational needs, from selecting a good starter plant on to its care and maintenance. It has humor thrown in here and there, which makes for a pleasing read. Now this in not a "picture book" of orchids nor is it meant to be. Goodness knows there are many high dollar books out there to fulfill this need. I liked this particular work as it does well illustrate that orchids are not as difficult to raise as many feel they are. Yes, some have very specialized needs, but for the most part, the orchids you have access to are not all that difficult if you just know what you are doing. This book gives you that basic knowledge to get you started. It uses simple terms and written in an easy style that does not send you running to the dictionary with every turned page. The illustrations are quite well done.

Now as for this being a book only for beginners, hmmm, I am not quite sure what to say about that. Granted, much of the information found here is basic and the entire work is not written in the dry, academic mode so often found in these works. I am certainly no expert myself, but have been messing with these plants for quite a number of years now, and to be quite frank, I learned a few things myself. Some of the stuff I thought I knew, I did not know. It may be just me, but I have found that as with most things you need to beware of "experts" and their advice. It is nice to hear their opinion, but you always need to check the facts our for yourself and from multiple sources.

I highly recommend this one for beginners and feel that a lot of the "old timers" could probably benefit from giving this one a read.

Great Beginner Orchid Book

As a beginning orchid grower I was a bit intimidated by the whole topic. But after reading Frowine's book, the topic seems much more approachable. I've started with a few moth orchids and they've done well, but now I'm inspired to try some oncidiums and paphiopedilums. I really would like to try some fragrant orchids as well.

I like the straight forward cultural information. It's clear the temperature, humidity, and light levels needed for the various orchids. It gives me a sense of which ones to try and which to wait on. The orchid photos in the center are inspiring, though I'd love to see more!

I also liked the in-depth listing of varieties for the various orchid types. There's a whole world of orchids out there to grow.

A great book for anyone starting out in orchids growing. Clearly written with the usual "dummies" humor and lightness. A good starting point for orchid growing.

American Indian Movement (AIM) activist Peltier, arrested more than two decades ago on charges stemming from conflict with the FBI on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, has become a symbol of the oppression of Indians and other indigenous people. Indeed, he is perhaps the most famous inmate in the U.S., regarded by many as a political prisoner, with Robert Redford, author Peter Mathiesson, former U.S. attorney general Ramsey Clark, and others calling for his release. He remains incarcerated, often in horrific conditions. As if engaged in the sun dance, in which apparently unendurable sufferings are embraced as a spiritual testimony, Peltier writes of his life, before and behind bars, with anger but not rancor. Since his youth as a warrior, he has become a spiritual elder whose words offer much to Indians and non-Indians alike. "We don't need more prisons," he writes. "We need more compassion. Part manifesto, part memoir, a standout collection by the celebrated, long-imprisoned American Indian Movement co-founder and activist. Peltier, a Sioux Indian, has been in federal prison since 1977, convicted of killing two FBI agents during the 1973 siege at Wounded Knee, S.D. Peltier asserts that he did not commit these murders, writing simply, Innocence has a single voice that can only say over and over, I didnt do it. Guilt has a thousand voices, all of them lies. (In his preface, former attorney general Ramsey Clark makes a compelling argument for why we should believe Peltier, a case also made by Peter Matthiessen in his much-litigated book In the Spirit of Crazy Horse). In this anthology, Peltier charts the course of his activism, describing his evolution from a young man on a South Dakota reservation who wanted what other young men in his circumstances wanteda car, a jobto a political organizer keenly aware of the injustices visited past and present on Americas indigenous peoples. Although he too easily falls into sloganeering (We are the voices of the earth. We speak for those who are not yet born. When you exclude us, you exclude your own conscience. We are your conscience!), Peltier has much to say about American Indian politics, a dauntingly complex set of issues; among other things, he insists that the US government follow a Canadian model in offering reparations for historical wrongs. He also advances the plausible view that the siege at Wounded Knee was a sideshow meant to disguise a deal through which a uranium-rich portion of the Pine Ridge Sioux reservation was ceded to the federal government. Writing more personally, Peltier recounts the intricacies of living behind bars. As a houseguest in hell, he writes, you learn that the devil has many mansions, and you keep shuttling between them for no known reason. Leonard Peltier: He Didn't Do It! Read his story and send a Petition to the President for a Presidential Pardon!

There is NO doubt whatsoever, that Leonard Peltier has been imprisoned falsely. Even A District Court Judge who reviewed the evidence several yrs ago, ruled that the evidence against him didn't hold up, circumstantial AND contrived. It is within the power of the President to give Leonard Peltier a Presidenntial pardon. There is a Petition online that one can sign and send to Obama. Whether or not it will do any good remains to be seen. This is a travesty and Justice was denied AND continues to be. He's in his 70's and ill. He needs to be released NOW and should have been decades ago because He Did Not Kill the two Agents. From what can be learned from reading in Peltier's own words (as the man who was there!) it is even more possible that the two agents were killed by what the military calls "friendly fire," but rather than own up, they pinned the deaths on the man they most wanted imprisoned: Leonard Peltier, and they got away with it.

Free Leonard Peltier, political prisoner for a crime he didn't commit!!!!

I cannot emphasize enough that what we, as a nation, have done in the name of, so-called, progress is atrocious and abominable. I mean we decry what other countries do in terms of policies and prisoners, but when it comes to our own national priorities, we can do no wrongs. Unfortunately as this book exquisitely expresses, we're no better than, say, South Africa during apartheid. We just dress it up in different terms and don't even acknowledge such when it goes on, despite the many attempts to open up our shadowy government policies to civilian viewing and oversight. Everyone should read this book, in my opinion, because it underscores the gross negligence of the US government toward the native peoples of this country.

Adobe Photoshop for Textile Design - I love this book
I've been working in the fashion industry as a textile designer for the past 25 years. I successfully put off using the computer for textile design all that time. Because I am a very competent artist I didn't have to. Over the years I tried learning Photoshop on my own but each time I found myself scattered and overwhelmed. About 6 months ago I took a class in Photoshop that covered this subject however I found the class highly inadequate. After I took the class and spent my money already a coworker of mine who does CAD work recommended Mr. Chipkins book. About three months ago I finally bought it. This book is too good to be true. It's so well written. Everything is explained in a step by step fashion and even to a very visual person like me I was able to pick up on everything. I had no trouble learning from this book, without this book I definitely couldn't pick up on the techniques. It's so easy to learn from and refer back to. It literally answered all my questions plus answered questions that I didn't know that I had yet. Hands down, I 100% recommend this book.

Using adobe photoshop for textile design

This book saved my life! I am a textile designer living in California. I have been contacted by a company to create a collection of textile designs for table covers. The customer has asked me to work with Photoshop. And this was new to me because I had never used this software before. And I can tell you, it was a real miracle when I found Frederick Chipkin 's book on Internet. I have learned a new way to work, the explanations are very clear, precise, humoristic, complete and easy! Now it is a real pleasure to work with Photoshop. I do recommend this fabulous book and Thank you so much to share your experience, Mr. Chipkin!
Inside the book you will appreciate the illustrations and the step by step explanations (with the included C Drom) to practice the exercises. It is a book for professionals freelancers (as I am).

Informative, Clear and Through, includes Good Tips!!!

As a fashion designer, I purchased this book to help me learn how to fill my flat sketches with my own print designs. I'm learning so much more than filling bodies. It gives tips on what to look for in creating repeats, changing colors of prints easily, creating plaids, and so much more.

A special note, Origin Inc. is a great small company to work with, their customer service has been very personable and so helpful... Excellent overall.

Hook for the Series Now

This book pulls you in right from the beginning. Yes it is the second book in the series. Which most people will then say it picks up so fast because its for the fans. However, these books at least the this one and the first are or could be read as 2 separated stories. That can be a really nice thing for those who want to get in to the series but only have a chance to read them out of order.

The chapters in the book are not to long at all. Being a faster reader you could finish this book quite fast. Others may take a bit more time, however it should still not take much more time then other readers. I also have not come across any hard vocabulary words that would stop someone from reading or enjoying the story line.

However, this is a book about a young girl in her 20s and her struggle with not only her fresh, new relationship with a young boy also in his 20s but who does not believe in the paranormal and her secret paranormal ability. So you can see a conflict there. But when they decide to take a week long trip out of the city (where it is much easier to block out the voices) to get some work done for their classes. She is met with a choice to except her roll and power and help those souls that are trapped and their love ones to move on or to keep it all hidden so her boyfriend does not think she is crazed or worse leave her forever.

Personally, I love stories like this. I enjoy the paranormal very much, I even watch much of it on TV. But there is something about reading it that takes me deeper in to it. Yes, it is a bit cliche' with the internal battle of excepting the power and letting the world know or hiding it forever to just seem normal and live a normal life, what ever that may mean.

Ghosts in The Park!

The second in Calloway's Southern Ghosts series, Ticket To Die takes place in an abandoned amusement park located in the fictional town of Abandon, Alabama. Everything about this town, from the park called Zephyr Land to the Abandon Inn, which is really just an old house, seems haunted.
Well ok, more than just "seems", but only certain "gifted" individuals really know this.
One of these folks is Amanda, a connoisseur of carousels, who has accompanied her boyfriend Jake to study the older ones there. She is then to write a research paper on how this carousel could be improved that she hopes will get her an apprenticeship.
Meanwhile Jake, a rising engineer, hopes to study the construction of the roller coasters.
Only they both quickly discover that something has gone horribly wrong, probably intentionally, that led to several deaths. The voices from beyond spend most of the remaining story trying to convince Amanda to help them get justice, while Amanda tries to convince Jake that she is not insane.
First, the degree to which the coasters and carousel are described is amazing. I'll definitely never look at coasters quite the same again. And I hope people always build with the highest quality parts.
Also, this story features a colorful cast of characters, from the old woman who runs the hotel, and her husband who fancies himself reenacting the role of Confederate general, to a heartbreakingly cute set of twin 5-year-old girls. One of the central characters debuted in the first book of this series, and while it isn't strictly necessary to have read that, some of his references will make more sense if you have done.
Overall, this was a compelling read. I always find it interesting to examine the inner workings of Southern culture and the many and varied people who reside therein. So do not be alarmed by the vandalized sign, "die?" "ride?" same difference. Go ahead and get in line! And enjoy this bit of summer time.

About the Author

Iqbal Husain is a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Akron in Ohio. He received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Texas A&M University. Dr. Husain is the founder of the Electric and Hybrid Vehicle Program at the University of Akron, which encompasses graduate and undergraduate courses, research on electric drives for electric and hybrid vehicles, and collegiate-level competitions on alternative vehicles. An IEEE Fellow, he is the recipient of the National Science Foundation CAREER award, the IEEE-IAS Outstanding Young Member award, the IEEE Third Millennium Medal, the College of Engineering Outstanding Researcher Award, and the Society of Automotive Engineers Vincent Bendix Automotive Electronics Engineering Award.

Solid on Fundamentals

Dr. Husain is an Electrical Engineer, therefore his book focuses primarily on the electrical, magnetic, electromagnetic & electromechanical aspects of EV & HEV vehicle design. From this perspective, his book is very solid on fundamental EV & HEV design considerations and component analyses. However, the continuously variable transmission (CVT)... including planetary gearsets (used in CVTs to combine/split torque) is a key HEV component. Consequently, I view omitting their discussion as dissapointing. On the other hand, Dr. Husain's text is very well written/edited and his style of explaining technical details is conversational, yet professional. I recommend this book without hessitation.

Hard to follow, not much practical information

This book is very hard to follow. The author presents examples (and sometimes answers) without outlining how to solve the problems. This is very frustrating! Most of the work in the book is calculus-based which would not be a problem if the steps for deriving the equations were more explicit. The information is very theoretical with little practical relevance to electric car design. The author starts out by explaining generic vehicle mechanics and then jumps right into battery chemistry and motors. Very little effort is spent on the interrelationships between these elements. The author does a decent job describing motor fundamentals, but he does not spend much time discussing the practical limitations of the technology. The hybrid discussion is relegated to the last chapter of the book, and then only a few pages are devoted to explaining this technology. Most of the chapter is spent describing various thermodynamic cycles such as the Otto cycle and Rankine cycle. Curiously,at this point the author resorts to a very high level discussion of these cycles, using very little math to show the effects of the electric motor on the function and efficiency of the traditional ICE vehicle.

Book is great, but I do not like kindle version. I was hoping that I could print partial parts of the book.

If you are a student, buy regular book since you won't be able to print anything...not even one page. I was hoping to print out pages with formulas, graphs, etc.
