From Library Journal
Pelikan collects some 66 articles or excerpts from 19th- and 20th-century literature, anthropology, religion, psychology, theology, and philosophy that touch upon religion and religious experience. The writers are as diverse as Kierkegaard and Black Elk, Teilhard de Chardin and Martin Luther King, with representatives of all the major world religions, East and West. While many of the pieces are well known, Pelikan includes a number of less familiar but welcome articles, such as Martin Lings's "The Reality of Sufism" and Nishida Kitaro's "A Study of Good." Pelikan has done the general reader a great service, making accessible a broad and intelligent collection of some of the best thinking on religion. Recommended for undergraduate as well as public libraries.

Apologia Pro Noia Sua
By John Philoponus
":it is probably accurate to estimate that in any decade of these two centuries more was written about religion in German scholarship alone than had been produced in an entire century of the early church." J. Pelikan, Preface

The Courage to Explore:

If the Yale eminent scholar, who devoted forty years to the history of religious thought has found it a bit daunting to put it together, do not be scared away from exploring this intellectually challenging collection. You will discover some enticing writings that will tickle your mind and boost your intellect.

I started examining the contents, and kept counting the pieces I read, or even heard of, and was happy to find some: The Grand Inquisitor; Beyond Good and Evil; Religion, the Opium of the People; I and Thou, The Screwtape Letters, Reverence for Life, the God above God, In the Beginning, Apologia Pro Vita Sua, Orthodoxy, The Importance of Living, The Phenomenon of Man, letters from prison. ... Be hopeful, so far so good.

Delicacy in Edition:

After reading the preface to discover the thematic plan of the intellectually enhancing editor, you examine the contents to identify the guide posts. They are Eight: Introduction, that he shares with Dostoyvesky's inquisitor. The Unbeliever, The Will to believe are in first group. The grandeur of God, Reverence for Life, and Reconstruction of Tradition go into a second group. While Love Abides, 'Mystical' Visions, and Faith & Freedom form the epilogue.

Patrick Henry, of the Institute of Ecumenical and Cultural Research concludes that; "This anthology is the best available sourcebook for anyone who realizes, or even just suspects, that the role of religious tradition in the modern world is part of tommorow's news, not simply yesterday's history."

Religious Thought Treasury:

Professor Pelikan selects some 66 pieces, of inspirational writings of the modern period, collected from the last two century World class religious literature. The writings explore central issues, and different approaches to faith in Buddhism, Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and atheism, arranged in eight topical sections, the selection includes a diversity of writings in anthropology, philosophy, psychology, and theology, that had made an impact on modern religious experience. The writers are as diverse as their writing areas, religions, and ethnic origin. While many of the articles are famous, at least to intellectuals, Pelikan includes a number of less known material. He has done the intelligent reader a great service, making accessible, in one volume, an interesting collection of a broad spectrum of the best of relatively recent religious thought.

Treasurer Jaroslav Pelikan:

"Jaroslav Pelikan is one of the world's leading scholars in the history of Christianity and has authored more than 30 books including the five volume The Christian Tradition: A History of the Development of Doctrine (1971-1989). He is the Sterling Professor Emeritus of History at Yale University where he served on the faculty from 1962 to 1996. He is the immediate past president of the Academy of Arts and Sciences" (wikipedia.org)

Recently, Jaroslav Pelikan was received into full communion with the Orthodox Church in America. In an open letter to members of Bethesda Lutheran Church, to which he had belonged, Pelikan called the move a "logical culmination of a development in my mind and spirit that has been going on for decades."

The Clash of the Cultures: Investment vs. Speculation, by John C. Bogle

Recommended Reading by Warren Buffet in his March 2013 Letter to Shareholders

How speculation has come to dominate investment—a hard-hitting look from the creator of the first index fund.

Over the course of his sixty-year career in the mutual fund industry, Vanguard Group founder John C. Bogle has witnessed a massive shift in the culture of the financial sector. The prudent, value-adding culture of long-term investment has been crowded out by an aggressive, value-destroying culture of short-term speculation. Mr. Bogle has not been merely an eye-witness to these changes, but one of the financial sector’s most active participants. In The Clash of the Cultures, he urges a return to the common sense principles of long-term investing.

Provocative and refreshingly candid, this book discusses Mr. Bogle's views on the changing culture in the mutual fund industry, how speculation has invaded our national retirement system, the failure of our institutional money managers to effectively participate in corporate governance, and the need for a federal standard of fiduciary duty.

Mr. Bogle recounts the history of the index mutual fund, how he created it, and how exchange-traded index funds have altered its original concept of long-term investing. He also presents a first-hand history of Wellington Fund, a real-world case study on the success of investment and the failure of speculation. The book concludes with ten simple rules that will help investors meet their financial goals. Here, he presents a common sense strategy that "may not be the best strategy ever devised. But the number of strategies that are worse is infinite."

The Clash of the Cultures: Investment vs. Speculation completes the trilogy of best-selling books, beginning with Bogle on Investing: The First 50 Years (2001) and Don't Count on It! (2011)

Amazon.com Review

Featured Guest Review by William J. Bernstein

There's something rotten at the core of the American financial system; we all know it.

Before I go any further, I'll have to put my own biases on the table. While I'm in general a big believer in the power of free markets, there are certain things they don't do particularly well. Consider, for example, airline safety. Free market fundamentalism would dictate leaving it in the hands of consumers, who would logically shun those companies that killed too many passengers. We're smarter than that, of course; in large part because of government regulation, the average year passes without a major airline crash. Ditto the interstate highway system; does anyone really believe that Smith's invisible hand would have produced anything like this gem at the heart of our economy had not Dwight Eisenhower not been so impressed with Hitler's autobahns?

Of course, there are some activities that the government should stay out of: it should regulate airlines, but it shouldn't run them; and it shouldn't produce food, automobiles, and almost all other goods. This begs a much larger question: just where do free markets fail?

Which brings me to Jack Bogle's marvelous book about American finance, a system that, as we've seen in the past few years, has failed in a number of areas. As the author shows, it has done so by maximizing profits for managers, minimizing them for owners, and the customer be damned. For more than half a century, Mr. Bogle has not only observed this evolving spiral of immorality and self-interest from the inside, but has also been instrumental in creating, almost singlehandedly, what is thus far the major alternative to it: the customer-owned Vanguard Group.

There's a paradox at the heart of The Clash of the Cultures that should rivet any capital markets participant: just how is that the more market oriented an investment company is, the poorer are its results? The author recounts in painful detail the sorry performance of mutual funds managed by the large publicly traded financial companies, and the poor stewardship at the heart of that failure. The superb performance of the funds run by Vanguard, which is essentially a non-profit organization, stands in stark contrast. And it's not just Vanguard; it turns out that TIAA-CREF, which is also essentially a non-profit, the government-run Thrift Savings Plan, and privately held fund companies all do much better than large publicly traded finance companies. It's as if, say, the Red Cross, Department of Labor, and Salvation Army had all founded nonprofit automobile manufacturers that turned out better and cheaper cars than General Motors and Toyota.

Bogle identifies the speculative (as opposed to investment) mind set of the publicly traded companies as the chief culprit; because of their next-quarter/short-term focus, they trade frequently (as do their customers), pay scant attention to the costs of these activities, and often extract revenues from their funds and their shareholders in less ethical ways as well.

But that's only part of the story. The Clash of the Cultures gets to the heart of this remarkable and, for our nation, critical, conundrum of how in some economic spheres, nonprofits can outperform the invisible hand. It's required reading for every concerned citizen and every worried investor, and food for thought for anyone with an open mind and a curiosity about the world.

Review
“The Clash of the Cultures: Investment vs. Speculation”   is a must read for investors who want to understand the forces that are working against them and what they can do about it to maximize their investment returns. It should come as no surprise to those who know Jack and his philosophy that the final words of his final book are:  ‘Stay the course!’—Forbes

“The Clash of the Cultures: Investment vs. Speculation is . . . an enjoyable read that ends with 10 lessons for investors that, while simple, are deeply valuable to the general public. . . Clash of the Cultures is a great summary of the breadth of Bogle's 60-plus years in the investment field. He offers observations on the shocking change in the culture of finance that he has witnessed first-hand. Among the most important of the shifts is that short-term speculation has crowded out long-term investment. Though this has been great for the financial sector, it has come at the expense of the public.” —CBS MoneyWatch

“Bogle, as the Godfather of index investing, has ideas that are timeless and based on simple math, and at the same time exhibit uncommon sense and a routinely overlooked view of how investors are consistently overcharged by the financial services industry. Fortunately, his wisdom is widely available to everyone. Much of that wisdom has been assembled in Bogle's most recent book The Clash of the Cultures: Investment vs. Speculation (Wiley, 2012). While most of the insights are time-honored themes in the Bogle canon, they are very useful for individual investors.” —Reuters

“Bogle's latest book tackles what looks like an artificial distinction. His Clash of the Cultures title conjures thoughts of world war and social strife. But he's talking about ‘investment vs. speculation’. . .  As in his previous books, Bogle is a master of the clear point and the pithy quote - from the investment writings of John Maynard Keynes and Benjamin Graham, pension adviser Keith Ambachtsheer and Bogle's old mentor the late Walter L. Morgan, as well as the Gospels of Luke and John.”—Philadelphia Inquirer

“You know what to expect when opening a book by John Bogle, founder of the Vanguard mutual fund group and inventor of index funds: a lament about the fall from grace of the US mutual fund industry, and a restatement of his strong conviction that COSTS MATTER!!!  Mr Bogle’s new book, The Clash of the Cultures , Investment vs Speculation, does not disappoint on either count, but it is also very much in tune with the zeitgeist in its focus on stewardship and fiduciary duty.  It lambasts US mutual fund managers for neglecting to act as responsible owners of the companies they invest in on behalf of the savers whose money they look after, and for their own governance failures.”—The Financial Times

“[The Clash of the Cultures] echoes many familiar . . . themes worth repeating, because they are too often ignored. Investors spend so much time chasing hot asset classes and hot fund managers that they end up buying high and selling low, all the while incurring transaction costs. In Mr Bogle’s words, ‘investors need to understand not only the magic of compounding long-term returns, but the tyranny of compounding costs.’ . . . The American pension-fund industry has been particularly bad at understanding these long-run fundamentals. Many schemes assume, on the basis of past performance, a return of 7.5-8%, a figure that is highly implausible given the current low yields. . . Meanwhile, many employees in the private sector have been switched into defined-contribution schemes. . .  But employees are not saving enough, are not allocating their portfolios efficiently and are incurring too many costs. It is hard to disagree with Mr Bogle that the ‘system of retirement security is imperilled, heading for a serious train wreck.’ But will anybody listen to him, when they haven’t in the past?” —The Economist

“John Bogle’s latest book, as much a piece of history as is it a playbook for how to repair financial markets scarred by two bear markets in 10 years and a loss of confidence, is one of those books on finance that ought not be left unread. The Clash of the Cultures is the latest and perhaps best book by the founder of Vanguard Group. . . Plus, for those not familiar with Bogle’s prose, the man can turn a phrase, which makes the book all the more enjoyable.”—IndexUniverse

“If the Occupy Wall Street movement is serious about helping people with real financial issues, then its leaders should read John Bogle’s book and embrace his ideas for change.”—Rick Ferri, Forbes.com

“John Bogle’s story is an oft-told tale, yet even Bogle junkies will learn some fascinating new facts from The Clash of the Cultures. Bogle takes of the cudgels on behalf of investors, who he believes have been poorly served by most of the industry. Bogle brings invaluable historical perspective to current issues ranging from high-frequency trading to the looming crisis in the U.S. retirement system to the use of mutual fund investors’ money to promote the growth of assets under management. Every thoughtful investor can benefit from his wisdom, served up with refreshing modesty by a giant in a field notorious for outsized egos.” —Financial Analysts Journal

“The book is a gem. Well-researched and carefully argued, there's simply no way to argue with Bogle's premises -- that the little guy always loses, that the more you churn the more you lose, that most people's retirements are dramatically underfunded, that management looks out for itself and not the stockholders, and that greed is driving the bus. . . Read Bogle, not just to learn about how to protect your investments and understand what really happens on Wall Street. But more than that, read The Clash Of The Cultures and declare yourself into the three percent who have ideas and aren't afraid to use them.” —The Huffington Post

From the Inside Flap

During the course of his sixty-one year career, mutual fund pioneer and Vanguard Group founder John C. Bogle has seen enormous expansion and remarkable change in the financial sector of the U.S. economy. In his tenth book, The Clash of the Cultures: Investment vs. Speculation, he brings his considerable wisdom and experience to bear on the most troubling developments of the recent era—the crowding out of long-term investment by short-term speculation.

During Bogle's career in the investment profession, he's witnessed a change in the very nature of our financial system, and not for the better. Our aggressive culture of destructive and costly speculation has come to dominate the earlier prudent culture of investment. To the detriment of our society, the idea of stewardship has gotten lost in the shuffle, replaced by salesmanship and innovations that have ill-served investors.

Far more than being a mere eyewitness to the last six decades of financial history, Bogle has been one of its most active participants. The many first-hand experiences he recounts include the creation of the first index fund and the creation of the first exchange-traded fund; and his critical role in the rise, the fall, and the renaissance of Wellington Fund, a real-world case study of the clash between investment and speculation. He sheds new light on the dramatic change in the culture of the mutual fund industry, the multiple ways in which speculation has invaded our retirement system, and the need for a federal standard of fiduciary duty.

Insightful and instructive, the book paints an alarming picture of how the financial world has moved away from a culture focused on value-adding long-term investment towards a value-destroying culture of rampant speculation—and the inevitable clash of these two cultures brought about by this transformation. Bogle concludes his book by outlining ten simple investment rules to help investors avoid the many hazards of investing and, by focusing on simplicity and economy, to meet their investment goals.

I Never Realized That I worked 25 years in a Casino
By Kindle Customer
I spent 8 years in the "securities" business as a salesman and then 13 years as a trader using house money. As a salesman, I cannot tell you the number of players (customers) that got wiped clean based on my advice. As a trader, I was directly part of the casino, effectively using the house favoring odds to scrape off a fair amount of money from the players. As a young person in the business as a salesman I was operating under the belief that I was assisting people in making "investments" but actually I had them putting all their chips (money) on black number 33 - long, long shots that rarely if ever paid off. Jack Bogle has made it crystal clear that 99% of the''securities" business is nothing buy a giant casino. The old joke, "Where are the customers yachts?"
finds its factual basis in this book. What an eye-opener!

What a Great Book!
By Book-Movie-Music Lover
Whether you are new to investing or a veteran, this should be a "must read." Indeed, the take-aways are very simple: If you want to succeed in investing, invest in index funds, and hold them long-term. Bogle eschews specialty investing (funds or equities other than broad market index funds), and he eschews speculation even more.
So, in theory, one could take a pass on reading the book and walk away with this advice (which, actually, has been around forever)for free. But that's not the purpose of the book. What the book does is explain, in incredibly persuasive detail, WHY Bogle believes what he does, and why his approach makes sense. Unless you understand the realities of why his approach is preferable, then it is unlikely you will seriously consider his advice.
Indeed, the book does have some shortfalls. Probably the most egregious shortfall is one that is common in virtually every "how to" or "self-improvement" book: failure to kick the readers in the butt and place some of the blame for their problems on themselves. Have you ever read a psychology "self-improvement" book that told the readers they were screwed up and that the problems they had were their own fault? Of course not. You don't want to get your readers angry, even though this is what they really need to hear. In "Clash of Cultures," Bogle NEVER blames individual investors for their problems (i.e., stock market losses). He blames everyone else possible: Congress, the judiciary, public accountants, the press, security analysts, corporate directors, fund managers, and so on. If you operate under the assumption that your problems are everyone else's fault, then you end up in "victim mode," and you wait around for the other people to decide to become honest and nice, so that your life can change. It ain't gonna happen. If you want to solve your problems, you have to take action yourself, and that involves placing the blame squarely where it belongs - on yourself. As the old saying goes, "When you point the finger of blame at someone else, there are three other fingers pointed right back at you." In other words, one shortcoming of this book is Bogle's reticence to make it clear that investors are responsible for themselves. More specifically, they can't expect to succeed unless and until they educate themselves. Handing money over to other people to manage for you, and then sitting back "fat, dumb and lazy" hoping the other people will do the right thing with your money and have your best interests at heart, is a prescription for disaster.
Another shortcoming of the book is that, given Bogle's 61 years in the mutual fund industry, he has a fondness for it over other investment vehicles, such as ETFs. He doesn't bash ETFs. He simply points out the fact that people who own mutual funds tend to hold them for long periods of time, while people who own the same basket of stocks in ETFs tend to buy and sell on a regular basis. This isn't a slam against ETFs. It is a slam against the people who own the ETFs. In other words, there is no requirement that, if you purchase an ETF, you have to sell it quickly. Bogle does admit (but glosses over this fact very quickly in only a couple of phrases in a couple of sentences in the book as quickly as he can) that ETFs can be less expensive than mutual funds in terms of fees. As such, logic seems to dictate that, if you want to purchase a broad market fund and are willing to hold it for a long time, then an ETF makes much more sense than a mutual fund, simply because the ETF will have lower fees in the long run. Again, though, Bogle doesn't come right out and emphasize this.
Other than these two shortcomings (letting individual investors off the hook and not more actively publicizing the lower costs of ETFs), this book is monumental. If you currently invest with a belief that you are smart enough to "beat the market" long-term and/or someone who prefers speculation (in and out buying and selling) to investment (buy and hold), reading this book might actually change your mind - and make you more money in the long run.

Another Jack Bogle classic book
By Artephius (.
I was already a life-long fan of Jack Bogle and his low-cost index funds. I have probably read about 4 of his previous books. Since I was already familiar with Jack's work, there were few surprises for me in this book.

As William Bernstein pointed out in his review, the large Wall Street investment firms have been a failure in terms of helping the average investor achieve his financial goals. Billions, yes billions of dollars are paid out in Wall Street bonuses every year, primarily for figuring out how to sell people and firms investments they should not buy. Just read a few books by people that worked on wall street for a few years...and you will get the idea. Many firms are legally bound not to buy investments that have too high of credit risk. Wall Street employees spend their time figuring out how to get poor investments rated as excellent so they can sell them.

Someone recently pointed out the only innovation from Wall Street or the big banks in the last 25 years that has actually helped investors is the ATM. I would argue that Jack Bogle inventing the index fund was the best thing that happened to investors in the 20th century.

If you have not read any of Jack Bogle's books, this is a good one to read. I found it encouraging that index fund stock investing now is about 28% of all money invested in stock mutual funds. Hopefully this percentage continues to trend higher as people figure out that Wall Street is not your friend.

Arminius the Liberator: Myth and Ideology, by Martin M. Winkler

Arminius the Liberator deals with the complex modern reception of Arminius the Cheruscan, commonly called Hermann. Arminius inflicted one of their most devastating defeats on the Romans in the year 9 A.D. by annihilating three legions under the command of Quintilius Varus in the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, as it is generally if inaccurately called. This book traces the origin of the Arminius myth in antiquity and its political, artistic, and popular developments since the nineteenth century. The book's central themes are the nationalist use and abuse of history and historical myth in Germany, especially during the Weimar Republic and National Socialism, the reactions to a discredited ideology involving Arminius in post-war Europe, and revivals of his myth in the United States. Special emphasis is on the representation of Arminius in visual media since the 1960s: from painting and theater to cinema, television, and computer animation.

Review

"Professor Winkler's book offers an object lesson in the use and abuse of the 'national hero.' This study makes a large corpus of German scholarship more accessible to the anglophone world, and will no doubt be an important resource for scholars of history, reception, media and political science." --David Cuff, Ryerson University and York University

"Winkler's book is a very expansive and detailed study of Arminius himself, his life and achievements..." -Herbert W. Benario, Emory University

A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail, by Bill Bryson

Soon to be a major motion picture starring Robert Redford and Nick Nolte.

The Appalachian Trail trail stretches from Georgia to Maine and covers some of the most breathtaking terrain in America–majestic mountains, silent forests, sparking lakes. If you’re going to take a hike, it’s probably the place to go. And Bill Bryson is surely the most entertaining guide you’ll find. He introduces us to the history and ecology of the trail and to some of the other hardy (or just foolhardy) folks he meets along the way–and a couple of bears. Already a classic, A Walk in the Woods will make you long for the great outdoors (or at least a comfortable chair to sit and read in).

Amazon.com Review
Bill Bryson has made a living out of traveling and then writing about it. In The Lost Continent he re-created the road trips of his childhood; in Neither Here nor There he retraced the route he followed as a young backpacker traversing Europe. When this American transplant to Britain decided to return home, he made a farewell walking tour of the British countryside and produced Notes from a Small Island. Once back on American soil and safely settled in New Hampshire, Bryson once again hears the siren call of the open road--only this time it's a trail. The Appalachian Trail, to be exact. In A Walk in the Woods Bill Bryson tackles what is, for him, an entirely new subject: the American wilderness. Accompanied only by his old college buddy Stephen Katz, Bryson starts out one March morning in north Georgia, intending to walk the entire 2,100 miles to trail's end atop Maine's Mount Katahdin.

If nothing else, A Walk in the Woods is proof positive that the journey is the destination. As Bryson and Katz haul their out-of-shape, middle-aged butts over hill and dale, the reader is treated to both a very funny personal memoir and a delightful chronicle of the trail, the people who created it, and the places it passes through. Whether you plan to make a trip like this one yourself one day or only care to read about it, A Walk in the Woods is a great way to spend an afternoon. --Alix Wilber

From Publishers Weekly
Returning to the U.S. after 20 years in England, Iowa native Bryson decided to reconnect with his mother country by hiking the length of the 2100-mile Appalachian Trail. Awed by merely the camping section of his local sporting goods store, he nevertheless plunges into the wilderness and emerges with a consistently comical account of a neophyte woodsman learning hard lessons about self-reliance. Bryson (The Lost Continent) carries himself in an irresistibly bewildered manner, accepting each new calamity with wonder and hilarity. He reviews the characters of the AT (as the trail is called), from a pack of incompetent Boy Scouts to a perpetually lost geezer named Chicken John. Most amusing is his cranky, crude and inestimable companion, Katz, a reformed substance abuser who once had single-handedly "become, in effect, Iowa's drug culture." The uneasy but always entertaining relationship between Bryson and Katz keeps their walk interesting, even during the flat stretches. Bryson completes the trail as planned, and he records the misadventure with insight and elegance. He is a popular author in Britain and his impeccably graceful and witty style deserves a large American audience as well.

From School Library Journal
YA-Leisurely walks in the Cotswolds during a 20-year sojourn in England hardly prepared Bryson for the rigors of the Appalachian Trail. Nevertheless, he and his friend Katz, both 40-something couch potatoes, set out on a cold March morning to walk the 2000-mile trail from Georgia to Maine. Overweight and out of shape, Katz jettisoned many of his provisions on the first day out. The men were adopted by Mary Ellen, a know-it-all hiker eager to share her opinions about everything. They finally eluded her, encountered some congenial hikers, and after eight days of stumbling up and down mountains in the rain and mud, came to Gatlinburg, TN. Acknowledging they would never make it the whole way, they decided to skip the rest of the Smokies and head for the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia-by car. Late that summer, for their last hike, the pair attempted to hike the Hundred Mile Wilderness in Maine, near the trail's end. They got separated and Bryson spent a day and night searching for his friend. When they finally were reunited, "...we decided to leave the endless trail and stop pretending we were mountain men because we weren't." This often hilarious account of the foibles of two inept adventurers is sprinkled with fascinating details of the history of the AT, its wildlife, and tales of famous and not-so-famous hikers. In his more serious moments, Bryson argues for the protection of this fragile strip of wilderness. YAs who enjoy the outdoors, and especially those familiar with the AT, will find this travelogue both entertaining and insightful.

The Writer Did Not Even Hike The Trail
By Ross
First of all, the whole premise of this book is false. The writer doesn't even finish the trail. He never even finishes the last segment of the trail. I kept reading and reading waiting for something to actually happen. Maybe a real adventure encountering wildlife or problems with equipment or weather. But, I remained disappointed. Don't get me wrong, Bryson is a very good writer. There is just nothing interesting in this book. He skips major portions of the trail (completing just over 1/3 of the whole thing), but claims on the very last page that he "hiked the Appalachian Trail." That takes some nerve to make a claim like that. Even most of what he actually trekked, he was simply transported there by his wife and picked up in the evenings. Kind of silly if you ask me.

It's worth your time.
By Bayard G.
Bill Brison’s memoirs of the Appalachion Mountain Trail walk that he of Hanover New Hampshire and a Sam Katz of Des Moines Iowa did in 1996-1997. Brison is a travel writer. He writes well and the book has a warmth that makes you want his book to go on and on. He has terrific humor of a sarcastic nature. He weaves into his narrative facts about the trail, the founders of the trial, how different hikers approach the hike (thru walkers, etc.), the gear, food and water required to walk the trail, the landscape, the mountains, rocks, trees, rivers, streams and lakes, fauna and flora, the dangers (bears, rattlesnakes, insects, poisonous plants, murders), the hardships, and the weather, the camp grounds and sheds, observations about other hikers, the National Parks, the local clubs that maintain the trail, persons and companies that have exploited the trees, animals, fish, and minerals, towns along the trail, roads, etc. He draws stark contrasts between the rustic trail and the concrete asphalt world on either side, and he gets you to see the rustic as preferable. The weakness of the book is Brison, at heart, a loner. I’d read his books, but I would not go out of my way to go on a hike with him (apparently not many of his friends or acquaintances did either, except for Katz and I would hike with Katz).

A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson
By Sheila Dhir
I found the book A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson, a quick and easy read. Bill Bryson, is ambling around his New Hampshire home, when he comes across an entrance to the great Appalachian Trail, the world's longest hiking path. The trail is long-it stretches over 2100 miles from GA to Maine. Naturally, Bryson instantly decides that he wants to hike the whole way! Unfortunately, the only hiking partner he can find, is Stephen Katz, from Iowa,an old friend and long lost recovering alcoholic. Bryson and Katz go way back; they took a trek across Europe together, when they were fresh out of college-and drove each other insane! Having no other choice, however, Bryson meets up with the woefully out-of-shape Katz and hops on a midnight plane to GA. So, Bryson and Katz hit the trail. Although, Bryson enjoys the gruelling hike, Karz is less enthused to sweat it out everyday. After several bone-breaking weeks, they realize that they have barely scratched the surface of the great Appalachian Trail. It will be impossible to hike the entire way.
The plot takes an interesting twist, which I will leave, you, the reader to find out for yourself! Bryson writes in an easy, interesting manner and style and the ending is unexpected as well!
