Review
"The universe of Sapkowski's The Witcher is one of the most detailed and best-explored in modern fantasy, offering endless opportunities for fresh ideas ... Complex character relationships enrich this already complex world; this is the sort of series fantasy fans will cherish."―B&N

"One of the best and most interesting fantasy series I've ever read. Though it functions well as adventure fiction, it has added depth and value as satire and commentary on fantasy literature ... Sapkowski is a genuine stylist."―Nerds of a Feather

"Like a complicated magic spell, a Sapkowski novel is a hodgepodge of fantasy, intellectual discourse, and dry humor. Recommended."―Time

"Like Mieville and Gaiman, [Sapkowski] takes the old and makes it new ... fresh take on genre fantasy."―Foundation on The Last Wish

"A breath of fresh air in a well-worn genre. Don't miss it!"―Dreamwatch

"Sapkowski has a phenomenal gift for narrative, inventing sensational events, creating a suggestive mood, and building up the suspense along with a dazzling, slightly cynical sense of humor."―Jacek Sieradzki, Polityka on The Last Wish

"Sapkowski's The Last Wish is a great collection of short stories centered around a witcher, Geralt - a rare sorcerous breed who hunts down the monstrous but is feared by the innocent. With a wondrous mix of Eastern European folklore and myth, beautiful princesses, mischievous demons and where all is not as it seems, The Last Wish is a great read - perfect for dipping into or just reading cover to cover, as I did."―Waterstones

"It is [his] world-weariness combined with his battle-honed powers that make Geralt such an interesting character. Here's hoping The Last Wish is merely the opening chapter in his English language adventures."―Edge

"I really, really enjoyed this book ... None of the characters in Sapkowski's world are black or white; they are all shades of grey, including Geralt and the monsters."―The Deckled Edge

"Sapkowski is very good at creating interesting, imaginative characters with unusual levels of depth to them ... The Last Wish is an enjoyable book full of stories both melancholy and comic."―The Wertzone

"This beautifully written character-based story from Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski ... a refreshing champion."―The Specusphere

"New battle mechanics, a fantastic storyline, and a gritty setting make The Witcher one of the most engrossing, mature RPGs to arrive on the PC in years."―Gamespot.com on The Witcher video game

"The Witcher delivers one of the most intense and rewarding role-playing experiences this year."―GT Reviews on The Witcher video game

Great Read (spoiler Free)
By jtoth
This is a great addition to the Witcher books. It has more action than the previous book and some great dialogue. I am looking forward to reading the next one.

**IMPORTANT**
If you've read The Blood of Elves without reading the second short story book (The Sword of Destiny, never got officially published in English), Google 'The Sword of Destiny Fan Translation' and read it! They are super easy to find, and even come in a kindle friendly (.mobi) format! If you're a fan of the series and haven't read the second short story book then you're really missing out.

The same Sapkowski you loved marred by a new translator
By Danny Blaugher
I will preface with this: the novel is excellent. If you are even a mild admirer of the Witcher series, this whole line of novels will suck you in. The Time of Contempt swiftly sets rolling the ball Blood of Elves positioned. It leaves you wanting more. In no way is this a bad thing. In fact, non of my complaints have to do with those things Sapkowski directly controlled, that which a translator can not alter: namely plot, pacing, and characterization. The grievances do start, however, when it comes to syntax. To some it may be a relief that Danusia Stok didn't translate this book, but rather the task was given to David French. I stumbled with his translation efforts. Many times throughout the book I had to reread sentences because they were composed in an especially unusual manner, and even after looking them back over, a number of them made no sense whatsoever. To quote one of the less egregious missteps:

"'Lydia,' smiled Vilgefortz, 'thanks for your acknowledgement.'"

It becomes clear further in the paragraph that Vilgefortz is speaking for Lydia, not thanking her as the syntax would imply. This blundering mistake could have been fixed with a simple word, added to the effect of 'thanks you,' but by some act of malevolence or neglect, it was left as is through the editing process. But as stands, this still is a coherent line, just with poor flow. What follows is something I still can't puzzle out:

"The manhunters didn't touch Mistle, not once they'd checked she really was untouched."

I really want to throw a copy of The Elements of Style at the translator and his editors, as I can't make head or tail of what this was meant to say. Danusia Stok may have struggled with Sapkowski's style and produced some prose that was stuttering, but I don't recall from either of her translations (Last Wish and Blood of Elves) such terrific errors as are in this book.

But, these errors having been examined, it still stands that a translator is but a mirror, and no matter how smudged its surface is, light always reflects back. It is exceptionally fortunate that Sapkowski's original Polish work is very bright. Even such blatant disregard for grammatical rules essential for communication in the English language cannot mar entirely what makes Sapkowski's books so loved. The characters are voiced uniquely, and he brings them about in ways which we would expect, and even in some ways we wouldn't. Geralt returns partway through the book, and his reveal is just as momentous as it is akin to returning to an old friend. He is, admittedly, less bitter and sardonic than he was in the previous books, but perhaps that is because he takes a backseat in this novel. As the book progresses, it become clear that it is Cir, not the headlined Geralt, who is the star of the novel, and in no way is this a bad thing. I can't say much in regards to why I am so excited to find out what she makes of the situation she is in by the end of the book without spoiling it, but her evolution throughout the tale almost put her above the Witcher as my favorite character from the series. Almost. The story arc of the Witcher and Ciri takes place in the backdrop of the politics and scheming of the north in the face of the Nilfgaardian threat. While a relatively minor part of the novel, it was very clear that large pieces were being moved on the proverbial checkerboard. I took great joy in the few clever twists Sapkowski threw into the book, carrying the same disbelief as did the characters. The book, in a summary, is intense and gripping. It involves us in the protagonists and their affairs. In true Witcher style, none of the sides are motivated simply. There is no right or wrong, and neutrality is still a narrow road to walk. I may have complained extensively about the translator, but that is because that is the only aspect I can truly critique. And even then, the book is a quick read despite the translator's staggered efforts. This is a book to be picked up by every fan who read Blood of Elves and enjoyed it, as it is more of the same and then some. And best (and worst) of all, it leaves you wanting more. At this moment, I am considering the long wait to the next edition against the inconsistent waters of fan translations. If not obvious, I loathe badly translated works. If the fact that I am willing to resort to the unpolished efforts of fans in translating the sequential editions of the series, in lieu of waiting for Orbit to tumble out another official release, is not evidence enough of this series's compelling drive, then I am at a loss as to what else to say.

The Witcher returns for a sinister turn of events
By Amazon Customer
Just finished this today and the book was great. If you enjoy the Witcher setting, its video games, or just want a different wrinkle to the fantasy formula, this is worth a read.

The middle was rather boring; for some reason, when Sapkowski describes banquets, balls, and the ridiculously named nobles who attend them, it gets hard to keep track of what's going on, and what is going on isn't all that fun to read. But outside of that, it was a delight to return to this world and the story had no issues picking back up once it got past the parts I had problems with. There is no deus ex machina here - the protagonists do fail and even when a savior-figure does come seemingly out of nowhere, it's usually just as helpless as the main characters are.

There's a reason why this book is called The Time of Contempt and it's not just because of the Elder Blood prophecy. By the end of the book, things get so dark and gritty it's almost hard to look back at how comparatively light the book, and the series itself, was before the game-changing events that occur in this volume.

I'm not convinced the new translator is doing a demonstrably better job than past entries, but English-reading Witcher and Sapkowski fans should be pleased.

Very cool and smart dissection of Tarantino's style and influence
By Michael Laskin
I had a terrific time with this book. As someone who has watched all of Quentin Tarantino’s films – and had varying reactions to all of them – I found this book both educational and extremely enlightening. Given Tarantino’s undeniable impact upon the film culture of the early 90’s and his subsequent (some would say unshakeable) influence ever since, this book is proof – if any was needed – of just how deeply Mr. Tarantino’s cinematic DNA has been embedded in the popular moviegoing world.

The author, Christopher Kenworthy, has clearly done his homework. He not only understands the complex emotional effect that Tarantino’s films elicit – often, it’s a cocktail of giddy, amoral violence and deeply messed-up humor, all polished off with a self-conscious movie nerd’s sheen and surf rock or 70’s soul on the soundtrack – but just how those sensations manifest themselves through his cinema. Breaking down, moment-by-moment, shot-by-shot, some of the most memorable and gruesome scenes from “Reservoir Dogs” and “Django Unchained” should be required homework for anyone looking to study Q.T.

Kenworthy examines the building of tension that comes with some of Tarantino’s most shocking and violent scenes. Since Q.T. is one of the most recognizable writers of dialogue working in movies today, he is able to play the audience like a puppet, knowing exactly when the brutality should strike. Kenworthy understands this, and he’s able to do much the same to his reader through mastery of his craft and knowledge of his subject.

It’s also interesting to note the stylistic differences that permeate all of the director’s films: the camera movements and general style of something like “Jackie Brown” is markedly different then the more frenzied, overtly cinematic approach of the “Kill Bill” films or “Django Unchained”. Kenworthy drives these points home with tremendous insight and he makes us see the picture crystal clear. His economy as a writer turns out to be his biggest asset.

Overall, highly recommended. This book made me see Tarantino’s films in an entirely new light. One can only hope Kenworthy covers more directors with more great books like this one.

A Celebration of Tarantino's Craft
By mediagoddess
Author Christopher Kenworthy tells us that “Tarantino is famous for many reasons, but he is underrated as a technical filmmaker” within the introduction to this very important book about film directing. And this is true, so many of us admire Tarantino for his gritty, realistic stories that are often produced as homages to classic films within various genres, that we forget that he is also a nearly flawless film director. If you are at all interested in Tarantino as an artist, and most definitely as one of America’s finest film auteurs, then this book is for you. You don’t have to be a student director to enjoy this book, although many students who are studying directing can definitely learn a lot from this volume. This is a must-read for Tarantino fans and film students alike. You will assuredly know how Tarantino sets up his scenes and executes his vision by the end of this book. I’m not a film director but I do enjoy his movies and I am now going to enjoy his movies even more after reading this book.

Sheds light on a master
By Dave Watson, Editor, Movies Matter
Terrific, awe-inspiring, and unearths secrets one of our modern masters deploys often and go often unnoticed. Kenworthy knows Tarantino; all filmmakers who read this will be empowered. Everyone else will learn a ton about film, and most if all, storytelling.

Concepts of Modern Mathematics (Dover Books on Mathematics), by Ian Stewart

Some years ago, "new math" took the country's classrooms by storm. Based on the abstract, general style of mathematical exposition favored by research mathematicians, its goal was to teach students not just to manipulate numbers and formulas, but to grasp the underlying mathematical concepts. The result, at least at first, was a great deal of confusion among teachers, students, and parents. Since then, the negative aspects of "new math" have been eliminated and its positive elements assimilated into classroom instruction.
In this charming volume, a noted English mathematician uses humor and anecdote to illuminate the concepts underlying "new math": groups, sets, subsets, topology, Boolean algebra, and more. According to Professor Stewart, an understanding of these concepts offers the best route to grasping the true nature of mathematics, in particular the power, beauty, and utility of pure mathematics. No advanced mathematical background is needed (a smattering of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry is helpful) to follow the author's lucid and thought-provoking discussions of such topics as functions, symmetry, axiomatics, counting, topology, hyperspace, linear algebra, real analysis, probability, computers, applications of modern mathematics, and much more.
By the time readers have finished this book, they'll have a much clearer grasp of how modern mathematicians look at figures, functions, and formulas and how a firm grasp of the ideas underlying "new math" leads toward a genuine comprehension of the nature of mathematics itself.

A Must Read
By Dylan
This book is by far the best book on mathematics I have ever read. It teaches the concepts in an intuitive, exciting way, and yet it is able to remain fun and engaging throughout. Technical material is tackled, in depth, without there seeming to be any work done. There are no exercises to be done, you simply follow Stewart along for a tour through modern mathematics. Ian Stewart's writing is flawless and almost turns this book into a thriller. I read this book in one night- I could not put it down! I stayed up until 4 in the morning reading and rereading passages; it is truly a masterpiece. The chapters are as follows:

Chapter 1- Mathematics in General: Here Stewart describes certain aspects of mathematics, and discusses their purpose and implications. He talks about abstractness and generality, intuition vs. formalism, and pure vs. applied mathematics. He tells the reader the importance of understanding WHY a theorem is true, not simply that it is. He ends with a collection of anecdotes.

Chapter 2- Motion without Motion: This is an example of thinking a bit outside the box. The chapter is devoted to overturning Euclid's proof that the base angles are congruent, and making a new one based on rigid motions. It doesn't sound too engaging, but, somehow, Stewart manages to make it quite exciting!

Chapter 3- Short Cuts in the Higher Arithmetic: A basic introduction to number theory- prime numbers, moduli, congruences, etc. The informal tone makes this the easiest and most understandable read on number theory I've yet encountered.

Chapter 4- The Language of Sets: Throughout the rest of the book, Stewart uses the language of set theory, so he introduces that here in an easy to understand way (using some imagery like bags of items, etc).

Chapter 5- What is a function?: Here Stewart addresses some of the historical problems of defining a function, and then uses the set theory from the previous chapter to define a general function, and the different types of functions.

Chapter 6- The Beginnings of Abstract Algebra: An introduction to groups, fields, rings, etc. Stewart uses the rigid motions from Ch. 2 as an example of the group concept, and then goes on to make a proof about the game solitaire (the British version) using groups. Also an explanation of the proofs about constructibility (trisecting an angle, etc) are given here.

Chapter 7- Symmetry: The Group Concept: This is where we begin to see that Ian Stewart may have a bit of a bias towards abstract algebra and group theory, as that is his specialty. That is perfectly fine, but definitely something to be aware of. The chapter on Real Analysis is certainly less in-depth than this one, but there are many hundreds of books on that you can use to fill the gaps. (Also, Real Analysis is difficult to make accessible to those without a background in calculus, whereas algebrais concepts are fairly natural). In this chapter Stewart discusses groups, subgroups, and isomorphisms with great passion.

Chapter 8- Axiomatics: This is one of my favorite chapters, and it centers on Euclidean geometry and the importance of axiomatics. It discusses models, the parallel postulate, alternate geometries, consistency, and completeness.

Chapter 9- Counting: Finite and Infinite: This is the standard treatment of Cantor and his amazing discovery. I mostly skimmed this chapter, because I had just completed a book specializing in the subject.

Chapter 10- Topology: From Mobius strips, to Klein Bottles, to orientability, to the Hairy Ball Theorem. This chapter keeps to its title. I especially love the last line about the Hairy Ball Theorem (which is a theorem that seems entirely useless at face value). "It has one application in algebra: it can be used to prove that every polynomial equation has solutions in complex numbers (the so-called 'fundamental theorem of algebra')."

Chapter 11- The Power of Indirect Thinking: This is a foray into graph theory and Euler's Formula. A lovely discussion at the end about coloring, as well.

Chapter 12- Topological Invariants: Continues the discussion of topology and proves Euler's generalized formula. Also classifies surfaces, and proves some more coloring theorems.

Chapter 13- Algebraic Topology: You can see that topology is an incredibly important tool in modern mathematics. Here he discusses Holes, Paths, and Loops.

Chapter 14- Into Hyperspace: A short treatment of polytopes and higher dimensions.

Chapter 15- Linear Algebra: A bit on the geometrical, set-theoretic, and matrix views of solving simultaneous linear equations.

Chapter 16- Real Analysis: A light treatment of infinite series, limits, completeness, continuity, and proving analytical theorems.

Chapter 17- The Theory of Probability: Random walks, binomial distibution, etc. Treated informally.

Chapter 18- Computers and Their Uses: Programming and how it works on a mathematical level.

Chapter 19- Applications of Modern Mathematics: A very interesting read about optimization and catastrophe theory.

Chapter 20- Foundations: The best treatment of Godel's proof I have yet to see. It is surprisingly rigorous, but easy to follow.

Appendix- And still it moves...: This was added 5 years after the book was written, and is an absolute gem! Stewart addresses the proof of the four-color theorem, he talks about polynomials and primes, he talks about chaos and attractors, and he ends with a reflection on real mathematics. A great end to a masterpiece.

This book is for everyone and anyone- a modest background in high school algebra and an appreciation for mathematics is all you need. Buy this book! Give it to your friends!

Fat Chance, by Aviva Orenstein

Confident at work but clueless at love, Claire is 40 and overweight—not a recipe she imagines can solve the romance gap. Dealing with her father’s death and an angry teen doesn’t make it easier. Finding no help from her ex, who is distracted by remarriage to a much younger woman, Claire copes by relying on a faithful circle of friends, a wicked sense of humor, and a new interest in fitness. When Claire meets Rob, a beguiling, slightly pudgy man at the gym, there is an instant connection. Just maybe she can haul the composure she finds at work into the gym with her. Or is it fat chance for that?

“A funny, moving portrait of a small-town Jewish community and the people who inhabit it, including a single mom coping with loss, a teen, and modern love. You’ll be rooting for Orenstein’s characters—especially her witty, lovably self-deprecating heroine—the whole way through.”
— Jennifer Richler, author of writing appearing in The New York Times, Slate, Salon, and The Atlantic

“Fat Chance is an evocative journey that sharpens our contact with what it means to be human. And it is a hilariously loving yet unflinching portrait of a woman imprisoned by the body she thinks isolates her from love and—maybe more important—sex. Orenstein is like a magician pulling pennies from the air, infusing the haunting with laughter, the seeming inescapability with hope, and in the end offers the surprising and poignant gift of a special kind of joy.”
— Michael Adams, author of Blind Man’s Bluff and Anniversaries in the Blood

A Charming and Enjoyable Read
By Allison Hess
I started and finished 'Fat Chance' this weekend (It is notable that that the newest season of House of Cards was just released - tough competition!!) Finishing the book rather than binge watching Netflix was an easy decision as I quickly became invested in Joanie, Sam, Rob and - of course - Claire. I read quite a bit - typically one or two books each week - and give 'Fat Chance' 5 enthusiastic stars. The book is funny, surprising and well-told. If you're looking to get lost in a smart story with memorable characters search no further! (Here's hoping 'Fatter Chance' and 'Fattest Chance' are in the works...)

A Joy Ride through Jewish Suburbia!
By Ruth Cohen
Move over Jonathan Tropper! Orenstein's sweet and sassy romp through upper middle class Jewish suburbia is a joy. Her characters are funny, earnest, and exasperating. You'll be rooting for Claire, the zaftig heroine, from the moment she sinks her teeth into that first jelly doughnut! We all need a friend like Claire.

A Well-Rounded Woman
By Amazon Customer
Aviva Orenstein has created an engaging, well-rounded (in every sense of the word) character in Claire. Claire is definitely someone with whom you would like to break bread, or more appropriately, share coffee and doughnuts. Do not be misled by Claire's deft one-liners -- her humor is interlaced with some heart-wrenching issues!

From Publishers Weekly
Design experts Bayley (Imagination, General Knowledge) and Conran (Ultimate House Book, Designers on Design, etc) offer readers a crash course in design in this impressive, coffee-table-ready resource. After a brief narrative history of design from the 18th century to the present (the rise of consumerism and mass production, the Arts and Crafts movement, the Bauhaus ethic, etc.), the design and pop culture heavyweights delve into an alphabetical listing of design figures, themes and products. The artful confluence of the societal, artistic and architectural is what sets the book apart: rather than relying on key figures, Conran and Bayley's wide net enables the reader to see both the forest and the trees, no small achievement. Though the sheer number of subjects restricts most entries to a paragraph or two, this is no staid or simplistic survey; Conran and Bayley inject plenty of colorful editorial comments, characterizing fashion icon Pierre Cardin, for example, by his "monomania," which can "infuriate or bore." The book assumes a familiarity with most styles and designers, though movements such as surrealism and modernism are well-explained. Bayley and Conran's experience with and enthusiasm for the material, coupled with up-to-the-minute coverage (the iPhone is included), make this a thoughtful contemporary look at an often mercurial subject. Color photos and illus. throughout.

Review
This ambitious compendium of international design history is both smartly written and gorgeously illustrated. Organized primarily as an A-to-Z encyclopedia of essential figures, companies, and moments in the last three centuries of design, it's the kind of book you'll dip into repeatedly just for fun. (The Week 2007-12-14)

Hundreds of large gorgeous photos make this a useful resource and a fun browse. (Metropolis)

This essential read for designers, or anyone who wants to know more, includes more than 300 colour photographs. (Globe and Mail 2007-12-15)

The book combines fascinating essays with an A-Z directory and 300 photographs. It's the latter, complete with informative captions, that first engage the reader.... Browsers will then move on to the intriguing ABC directory -- short items about design movements, innovations and innovators... But quick hits are only part of the appeal of this book... The authors trace the history of various artistic movements, bringing order to what might seem like an avalanche of design concepts. The authors also weigh subjects such as who sets standards for taste, and the difference between European and American sensibilities. (Grand Magazine 2008-10-01)

Terence Conran and Stephen Bayley ... have seamlessly orchestrated a history of design that is as eclectic as it is evocative. (Jon Alain Guzik Miami Modern Living)

This is a brilliant book. (Bill Robertson Star Phoenix (Saskatoon) 2007-12-15)

Additions of such latter-day icons as Phillipe Starck and Apple designer Jonathan Ive are described with fantastic photographs and lively, Conran-esque text.... If you found the 1985 volume useful, you'll want this useful update. (Azure Magazine 2007-12-31)

This book gives an opinionated, comprehensive history of industrial design from paper clips to cars and is an encyclopedic survey of the best 19th and 20th century industrial designers whose works have had a lasting impact. (Zahid Sardar San Francisco Chronicle 2007-10-13)

A rousing A-to-Z guide to the history and personalities of design... Richly illustrated and elegantly packaged, the book is beautiful enough for the coffee table and encyclopedic in its scope. (Kimberley Brown House and Home)

If you don't know your Ikea from your Eames, this hefty tome is a swell start to building your arsenal of cool facts. Conran and Bayley know their stuff. Gorgeous photos are teamed with refreshingly brief, yet detailed, blurbs.... 'Design' makes a great addition to your coffee table, or a classy gift for a stylish loved one. (The Globe and Mail 2007-11-24)

Its 336 pages are more illustrative than encyclopedic, but by carefully limiting the number of entries in their A-to-Z look at domestic objects and their creators, the authors are able to say something meaningful about most with lots of room left over for pictures. (Michael Lassell Metropolitan Home)

Provides an encyclopedic portfolio of iconic modern design, from Johan Vaaler's paper clip to Jonathan Ive's iPod. (Elle Design)

Stephen Bayley and Terence Conran have put together a comprehensive directory of just about everything related to design and those who create it. A thought-provoking read for design aficionados, techies, and pragmatic consumers alike. (Charleston Magazine)

Refreshingly, the authors do not hesitate to reveal likes and dislikes.... This is a solid purchase, especially for its reasonable price and international scope. Summing Up: Recommended. Undergraduates, practitioners, and general readers. (R. T. Clement, Northwestern University Choice 2008-04-01)

great for a young designer...
By S. Lin
For a design book under $25 bucks, this book is a steal. It features a lot of contemporary designers, with great pictures, interviews, and a bit of art history to boot. Gives you a lot of ideas and a few things to chew on.

For a seasoned designer, this book may be kind of basic. However, for a student or a young professional, this book offers a wealth of information.
